This is a stunning original Civil War belt buckle from the state of Virginia. This is the version of Virginia belt buckle that is illustrated on page #234 in the revised edition of Mullinax' buckle book as figure #431. He states that in 1860 in 1861, the New York firm of James Smith & Sons produced. This pattern of buckle for the state of Virginia. He notes that the New York Journal of Commerce reported the seizure of the Virginia belt buckles and the guys to produce them. After the Civil War had started in 1861. On the face of the buckle it has the wreath branches on each side and in the middle it has the bold "VIRGINIA" lettering on the ribbon banner at the bottom. In the center it has the great seal of the state of Virginia. The Virginia seal which shows Virtus holding a spear in one hand and a sword in the other hand. She is standing with Tyranny at her feet. It also has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". As you can see this one is just beautiful from all angles. On the back of the stamped brass buckle it has the keeper hook intact as well as the bar they attached the belt top the other side of the buckle. The keeper hook has the vividly clear maker's Mark of the James Smith firm as well as its New York City production location. This is one of the many things that profit hungry northern manufacturers shipped to the south while preparing for the upcoming Civil War. One thing that makes this buckle stand out from all the rest is what is scratched on the reverse of the buckle. It reads "Lt. A.W.R." in small but very visible letters. The records show that Lieutenant Atwell W. Robertson was 29 years old when he enlisted on June 24, 1861 in the Nottoway Light Artillery. He enlisted as a 1st Sergeant, but would be promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on may 24th 1862. It shows that he was wounded on July 28, 1864 at the fierce fighting in Atlanta, Georgia. He was hospitalized in Forsyth, Georgia, where he would die from these wounds less than a month later on August 23, 1864. So with this buckle you not only get a wonderful and scarce Confederate buckle. But you know exactly who wore the piece and that they gave the last measure of devotion for the cause they believed in.
