This isa cool pair of pieces from New Jersey! This is an original Presidential appointment paper. This presidential appointment to brevet brigadier general was given to William Penn Robeson, Jr., and the ink has faded but reads "William P. Robeson...the rank of Brigadier General by brevet...for gallant and meritorious service in the battles of Five Forks and Southside Railroad, Virginia..." Robeson was commissioned a first lieutenant in the 3rd New Jersey Infantry in 1861, promoted to captain in 1862, and discharged for promotion to major in field & staff of the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in late December 1863. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in September 1864, and was awarded brevets to colonel and brevet brigadier general for meritorious service at Five Forks and Richmond. He was commissioned a captain in the 7th U.S. Cavalry in 1866 and again was brevetted brigadier general, but resigned in 1867. This one is dated 1866 and is adorned with the stamped signatures of Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. The vellum paper measures 15 inches by 18 inches in overall size. It comes nicely framed in the antique wooden frame that measures 21 inches by 17-1/2 inches. The appointment is accompanied by a fine albumen photograph of Robeson in dress uniform. The albumen measures 5-1/2 inches by 8 inches in size. The paper is imprinted on the mount with the photographer marking of E.T. Whitney of Norwalk, Connecticut. Printouts of his service as well as that of the 3rd New Jersey will accompany the pieces. This set is ready for your wall.
