What a great looking coat! This is an original Civil War artillery officer's coat. It is the single breasted version that was made with the rich blue material. On the front of the coat, it has the 9 buttons going down the middle. The buttons are the ones designed for an artillery officer. We know this because it has the eagle in the center of each button with an "A" on the eagle's shield which denotes the artillery branch of service. On the back of the buttons, they have the maker marking of D. Evans of Attleboro, Massachusetts and it has their name very clearly. A few of the buttons were replaced along the lines with a couple of them being infantry buttons. On the shoulders of the coat, it has the matching embroidered insignia. Each side has the red background for artillery with the single bar on each side for the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In my opinion, these boards are very well made modern reproduction replacements added to enhance the display. They look great on the coat. The collar of the coat measures 1-1/2 inches and folds down beautifully for an attractive look. The velvet on the collar is original with a stunning look. When you open the coat up, see the original quilted lining that is in beautiful condition. It has the correct tail pockets on the long pattern skirt. This long skirt as well as the wide elbows on the sleeves are a couple of the ways of dating the coat to the Civil War era. On the cuffs of the sleeves, it has the 6 artillery cuff buttons intact. A few of the cuff buttons are replacements. . You can see a few spots where the coat has had some repairs to the material. You can tell that it saw service but was well taken care of over the years. This is a fantastic looking original Civil War artillery single breasted frock coat.
