Civil War 1862 Dated Naval Cutlass With Scarce New Jersey Marking

This is a neat Civil War sword. It is the classic U.S. Model 1860 naval cutlass with scabbard from the Civil War. There is one thing that separates this sword from the standard Civil War model 1860 naval cutlass. Stamped into the base of the blade you can see the "NJ" letters that denotes being used by the New Jersey militia. I have owned probably over 200 of these over the years and this is only the third one that I have been able to get that has the "NJ" marking. At the base of the front of the blade you can see part of the "USN" marking as well as the 1862 production date that is vividly clear. It also has the "D.R." for the inspector, Daniel Reynolds who approved the sword for military use. The blade is full-length with an excellent lighter color all over. These naval cutlasses have the brass basket style hand guard and this one has all of the brass as you can see in the picture. The handle has worn down to the wood but it also has a nice look to it. Up on the top of the brass pommel cap you can still read the "DR" inspector initials. On the inside of the guard it has the correct stamped rack numbers which would've been part of the on board inventory system that the Navy used during the Civil War. The handle present with a beautiful amount of the original leather intact and is still nice and tight. The sword is accompanied by an original leather scabbard. The scabbards on these cutlasses were made of a single piece of leather that was folded over and riveted down the back. The last rivet and leather is still solid. Very few of these scabbards made it since the war. At the top of the scabbard the brass belt frog stud is present allowed for attachment to the sailor's belt frog. The scabbard displays very well. This is a nice original Civil War naval cutlass and it has the neat New Jersey marking in addition.
