Here is your chance to own an authentic military document signed by the most famous of all Confederate Generals, Robert E. Lee. This document was signed by Lee before the Civil War while he was serving as an Engineer. It is a fine 1 page letter written from the Engineer Department in Washington, D.C. on April 1st 1835. He writes to the Adjutant General of the US Army Roger Jones (Father of the the commander of the Confederate ship CSS Virginia (Merrimac) against the USS Monitor. It states " Sir, I enclose herewith a return of the Corps of Engineers and Officers of the Line on duty in the Engineer Department for the month of March 1835." It is signed at the bottom by order of "Your OB St (Obedient Servant) R.E. Lee" The Signature is the classic Lee style autograph that is coveted by collectors. Below the signature it has his rank of Lieutenant. It is hard to image Lee as anything but a General but he worked his was up. This is one of his early documents that are tough to find. The document itself measures 9-3/4th inches by 8 inches in overall size. It is accompanied by an engraving plate image of Lee wearing his Confederate uniform later in his life. This image has been trimmed out of a book. One thing that accompanies this autographed letter is very special. It has a type written transcript from one of the previous owners, Charles Sessler of Philadelphia. He owned the oldest Antiquarian Bookstore in America. It was located in Philadelphia and opened up in 1882. The letter has the look of being from the 1920's to 1940's. It is a great little extra to an already wonderful original letter from Robert E. Lee.
