Wonderful Civil War Poughkeepsie Military Institute of New York Cadet Uniform
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great looking Civil War uniform. This is an original cadet uniform from the Poughkeepsie Military Institute in Poughkeepsie, New York. Tice's button book tells of how in 1857, Dr. Charles B. Warring joined with Mr. Bisbee to run the old College Hill School also known as the Poughkeepsie Collegiate School. The locals called the school "Dr. Warring's Military Institute". What makes the coat stand out are the distinctive uniform buttons that adorn the pretty deep blue cloth. The buttons have the three stacked muskets with a book in the center. The image is on a lined field with stars around the edge. At the bottom it has the lettering "P.M.I." that stands for Poughkeepsie Military Institute. The buttons have the retailer marking of the famous New York firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. They were actually made by the firm of Scovill in Waterbury, Connecticut. These button are listed in Albert's button book as SU322 and in Tice's button book as NYS288A1. The front of the coat has the two rows of 9 buttons and all 18 of them are still present. It has the small matching cuff button on each side of the collars. The cuffs of the coat are designed with the gold bullion stripe and the four cuff buttons on each side. On the back of the coat it has 5 of the original 6 coat buttons ornamenting the cloth. When you open the coat, you can see the original lining intact with a pleasing worn but not abused look. This is a great coat with a fine display.
