Here is a very tough to find set! This is an original artillery short sword in the original scabbard that is accompanied by the original belt rig. This is the pattern of sword that is referred to as the U.S. model 1832 foot artillery sword. These swords were used up to and throughout the Civil War by artillerymen. Their design was intended to be used as much as a tool as it was to be used as a weapon. Most of the ones that you encounter were made by the Massachusetts firm of Ames. This is one of the tougher to find versions that were sold through a retailer. There are some subtle ways to tell the difference. The crossguard is made much more slender that the Ames contract guards and they are also made without having the rivets holding the handle onto the blade. The blade is finely crafted and is probably made by the Ames firm. At the base of the blade it has the simple "C" stamping. This probably means it didn't pass Government inspection and was "Condemned" and rather than discard it, they sold it commercially. The rest of the rig is basically identical to the regular Government purchase sets. It has the original black bridle leather and brass scabbard with the drag still intact. The belt and scabbard frog is constructed of the brown buff leather. The belt is in fine shape and could be worn even today. It has the cast brass eagle sword belt buckle with the applied German silver wreath still intact. This is a great looking set for the artilleryman in your life.
