Here is a great little piece for your campsite display. This is a pocket-size edition of the "The Heidelberg Catechism, or
method of instruction in the Christian religion. This one was printed in 1857 in Philadelphia and is so marked on the title page. Many Union soldiers were German immigrants, many of whom were enlisted straight off the immigrant ships. It is possible that this book was carried by one of those soldiers. You can tell by the wear to the book that it was carried quite a bit. The inside cover still has some pencil writing but not enough to make it out. This is a great little personal item dated from before the start of the Civil War, 1857.
