7th Maine Infantry Charles Whittemore Presentation Sword by C. Roby

Here is a fine looking sword and we know who carried it. This is a classic example of the Civil War foot officer's sword. This is the pattern that was worn by the lower ranking officer's during the War. This one has a full-length 31-1/4th inch slightly curved blade etched with military motifs and foliate design. The front side has the spread-wing Union eagle and the back has the Gothic letter "US" lettering. The original handle of the sword is intact. The wooden core is covered by the shark skin grip that has the original twisted brass wire intact as well. The sword had all of the metal parts silver plated at one time. The sword is accompanied by an original Roby made black leather scabbard with gilded brass mounts and drag. The scabbard was never plated so it is probably a replacement but it is original. What makes this one really stand out is that the back of the inside of the handguard is finely engraved "Presented to/C.B.W./by his friends in Augusta, Me." The records show that Charles B. Whittemore was from Augusta, ME and was 24 years old when he enlisted. Whittemore Enlisted on 9/6/1861 as a Quarter Master Sergeant. On 9/6/1861, he was commissioned into Field & Staff Maine 7th Infantry. He transferred out on 8/21/1864 and on 5/18/1864, he was commissioned into US Volunteers Quartermaster's Dept. He was Mustered Out on 10/30/1865On 8/21/1864, he was commissioned into Field & Staff Maine 1st Vet Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on 5/18/1864. Whittemore was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 1/1/1862and also Quartermaster), then to Captain 5/18/1864 (Captain & Asst Quartermaster). He was also promoted to Major 3/13/1865 by Brevet. He died on 11/1/1882. On the back of the top mount, it has the desirable maker marking of the firm of Christopher Roby of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts. A printout of Whittemore's service as well as that of the 7th Maine Infantry will accompany the sword. Our friends at CivilWarData.com even had an image of Whittemore in uniform. A cool sword with a nice history!
