This is a nice looking piece of history! It is an original eagle style hatpin. This is the pattern referred to by collectors as the "Jeff Davis" hatpin. They would have adorned the side of the Hardee pattern military hat. It has the eagle in the center with the rays up above and the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" wording. The eagle has the shield on her chest with the arrows and laurel leaves in her talons. On the back of the insignia it has the solder remnants where the attachment hooks (missing) would have been at one time. There is also some old glue from a previous mounting. And there is a little label that reads "FORT GRAHAM". Fort Graham was a pioneer fort established in 1849 by Brevet Major R.A. Arnold (Companies F and I of the Second United States Dragoons)[1] at the site of Jose Maria Village, an Anadaca camp on the western edge of present-day Hill County, Texas. It remained in service until 1853, when settlements had moved further west. It was named after Col. William M. Graham, who died at the Battle of Molino del Rey.A line of seven army posts was established in 1848-49 after the Mexican War to protect the settlers of West Texas and included Fort Worth, Fort Graham, Fort Gates, Fort Croghan, Fort Martin Scott, Fort Lincoln, and Fort Duncan. It is an excellent piece of Civil War history!
