1862 - 1863 Production Bullseye Canteen With Philadelphia Maker

This is a very attractive original Civil War soldier's canteen. This is the style referred to by collectors as the "Bullseye" pattern because of the reinforcement rings that were designed on the side of the canteen body. At the top of the canteen it has the original pewter spout intact and you can clearly see the maker's mark of "C.H. & Co. PHILA." This is the marking of the firm of Code, Hopper & Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Code, Hopper & Co. Philadelphia, PA. Formerly supplied smooth-sided canteens to Philadelphia in 1861 as Code, Hopper & Gratz. The firm dissolved on 3/31/1862 when Gratz departed. Reformed as Code, Hopper & Co. They were in business with Government contracts in only 1862 and 1863. In those 2 years they held contracts for a total of 118,867 canteens but the 1st 26,667 were with unmarked spouts. This means that this one is definitely a Civil War production canteen and not a post war one. It also has the original sling loops in place on the sides of the canteen body. There is one small hole down by the bottom strap loop. This is a nice used but not abused canteen with a fine Philadelphia maker.
