1862 Contract Civil War Bullseye Pattern Canteen With Horstmann Maker Mark

This is a fine authentic Civil War soldier's canteen. This is the classic style known to collectors as the "Bullseye" pattern with the reinforcement rings on the sides. It still has an attractive look with a relic style dark gray color all over. Two of three of the original strap loops are still present on the sides. The original pewter spout is present at the top of the canteen. On the side just below the lip of the spout you can still see the traces of the Civil War maker's mark of Horstmann Brother & Company of Philadelphia. The maker's book states that Horstmann's only had 2 military contract for Civil War production of canteens. This one has the 8 rings on the side, which lets us know that this is part of his first contract of August 31st 1862 for 50,000 canteens. This pattern is illustrated and described on page 124 of the canteen book by Michael O'Donnell. This is a nice original Civil War canteen for your collection.
