Surgeon's Chapeau of Dr. Richard McSherry (1817-1885) U.S. Navy 1843-1856

Here is a very cool looking original Naval Surgeon's uniform hat. This is the classic officer's chapeau hat for a Surgeon. The pretty beaver pelt body is finely crafted with the material that has a specific pattern. This pattern lets us know the rank of the officer that wore the hat. It lets us know that it was worn by a Senior Vice-Surgeon. It has the cockade on the side of the hat but the button is lost to the ages. It still has the bullion ornamentation. On the inside of the hat, it has the original lining and sweatband intact. It has the embossed golden maker label from the Philadelphia firm of William H. Horstmann & Sons. The hat comes in the original Jappaned tin casing that is complete. It makes an amazing display pair as you can see! This hat came out of the family of two important sailors. It came from the family of Richard McSherry and Admiral Augustus Henry Kilty. The chapeau does not have McSherry's name in it but since Kilty wasn't a doctor, it almost certainly was McSherry's hat. Richard McSherry was born on November 21, 1817, in Martinsburg, Virginia, he studied at Georgetown College and at the University of Maryland, and received the degree of M. D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1841. Being appointed assistant surgeon on the medical corps of the U.S. Army on 21 August 1838, he served under General Zachary Taylor in the Second Seminole War and resigned his commission on 30 April 1840.From 1843 to 1856 he served as assistant surgeon in the U.S. Navy, and after that practiced medicine in Baltimore until 1883. He died there on 7 October 1885. He was also a founding member of the Baltimore Academy of Medicine. This is a cool hat and honest association to an important doctor.
