Beautifully Designed Confederate 1864 Four Per Cent Call Certificate Remainder
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful piece! It is the pattern of Confederate certificate listed as Ball 354 and Criswell 159. It is an Undenominated 1864 Four Per Cent Call Certificate Remainder. These call certificates were printed and intended to be used as part of the Act of February 17, 1864, which led to currency reform near the end of the war. Call Certificates were similar in some respects to certificates of deposit, with the bearer entitled to receive a fixed amount of dollars with four percent interest on demand (rather than at a fixed date) at either the Treasury or designated depository office. The face contains a somewhat romanticized vignette titled On the Rappahannock depicting two soldiers standing guard overlooking the river valley and an end panel containing "Call Certificate". The back has a printed form to allow the transfer of the certificate to another party from the original recipient. These Call Certificates were never issued and come down to us today only in unissued remainder form. Originally printed in sheets of four with stubs, this example has survived, as have most, as a single certificate with no stub remaining. It has been professionally graded by the PMG Company. They rated it as being "Very Fine" condition. It is encapsulated in their acid free holder for display and preservation. This is a great piece of Confederate banking history!
