Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the coolest of the Confederate States of American Savings bonds. This is the early pattern of savings bond that was issued while the government was still in Montgomery, Alabama. There were only a handful of the bonds issued before the capitol moved to Richmond. This is the $1,000 denomination. A total of 1,000 of these 8% transferable certificates of stock (registered bonds) were printed and shipped to Montgomery from ABNCo in New York, during the first day or two after the start of the Civil War. They were part of the deal negotiated by G.B. Lamar for the Confederate government that also included Treasury Notes that were ultimately sub-contracted to rival National Bank Note Company in the weeks leading up to the start of the Civil War. Around 810 of these instruments were issued, datelined Montgomery, between April 17 and June 30, 1861. This example was issued on May 2, 1861, and was payable to the State Bank of South Carolina. It has the image in the center of the top shows the pre-war image of the new Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It has the printed serial number of "132" on each side of his image. In the lower left hand corner, it has the image of John C. Calhoun dressed improbably in a toga holding a scroll inscribed Truth, Justice and the Constitution. The center of the bond has the conditions of the bond payment written out as well as the name of who it was issued to. It has the red ink "100" large overprint in the center. It is correctly hand signed in fine old ink and is hand dated from May 10th 1861. On the back of the bond it has the red printing where the bond could be transferred. It has been professionally graded by the PMG Company. They rated it as being "Very Fine" with the notation of four tape repairs of edge splits/ tears, additional fold splits, and staining It is encapsulated in their acid free holder for display and preservation. This is a great piece of Confederate banking history!
