Very Scarce $15 Million Loan Confederate Bond From 1864 CR139

Here is a tough to find bond. This is the pattern of Confederate bond that was issued by the Confederate Government under the Act of February 28th 1861. It was to cover a $15,000,000 loan to finance the Southern cause. These certificates were created to allow the holders of registered bonds that were part of the February 28, 1861 loan to use them to pay export duties on cotton after the interest on registered bonds was no longer made in coin (after July 1, 1862). This right had previously been reserved for holders of coupon bonds that were part of the loan, since the coupons were accepted for payment of export duties on cotton. This action put holders of both classes of securities on an equal footing, with either these certificates or bond coupons being acceptable payment vehicles for cotton export duties. The certificate features a vignette of two sailing vessels and an end panel with TREASURY DEPARTMENT superimposed over CSA. There are several endorsements. Approximately 2,760 were issued between July and August 1864, with Simmons estimating a surviving population of between 36 and 50 pieces. The certificate has some toning and stains and some tears repaired. It was printed by George Dunn & Company in Richmond and is so marked in the lower left hand corner of the main bond section. The piece measures 6-1/8ths inches by 3-5/8ths inches in overall size. This pattern is listed int he Ball book on Confederate Bonds as B-284 and in Criswell's book as CR-139. Ball 284 is payable to and endorsed by A(nna) E. Gray of Charleston, SC. This fine original piece of Confederate history was professionally authenticated and graded by the PMG Company and they have rated it as being "Very Fine" Condition. The note comes in the PMG acid free holder for display and preservation. In my 30+ years in the business, this is only the second one I have ever been able to offer.
