Springfield Socket Bayonet With The Buff Leather Shoulder Sling
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a good looking socket bayonet for the .58 caliber Springfield rifle. This is the pattern known to collectors as the model 1855. This is the one that would go on the .58 caliber Springfield or contract muskets of the model 1855, 1861 or model 1863 either way. It has a full-length blade with the "US" stamp at the base still visible. The socket is complete and has the original lockring and screw. What makes this one extra special is that it is in the leather and brass scabbard and has the shoulder sling. This is the pattern that is shown on page 147 of the American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards by Reilly. This is the model 1839 shoulder belt and scabbard. This is the rare 3 hook plate on the shoulder sling. This one has excellent lead in the back and all three of the iron hooks are intact as well. These hooks are the style that has the iron wire hooks and they are perfect. The white buff leather display well and on the inside it has the "39 W.W.H. Co. G No. 11 G. 24" markings. It also has the remnants of the maker marking of "BAKER & McKENNEY / 141 / GRAND ST. / NEW YORK". This address indicates this cap was likely made or sold by them in 1865, as the firm of Baker & McKenney did not move to the Grand Street address until December 1864. This is a fantastic display set for your relic room.
