Identified Civil War Naval Officer's Sword & Scabbard by Clauberg
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a classic original Civil War naval officer's sword. Officially known as the U.S. model 1852 naval officer's sword, this is the style that was worn by naval officers during the Civil War. The blade is full length and is etched on each side with patriotic and other designs. The etching on the back of the blade has anchor as well as the flags and spears with "USN" on the banner. At the base it has the "IRON PROOF" marking. This is a quality marking that states that the steel of the blade was good enough quality to cut through iron. On the back side of the blade it has the stamping of knight in armor. This stamping lets us know that the sword was manufactured by the firm of W. Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. They manufactured many quality edged weapons for the union during the Civil War. The front of the blade has the perched Union eagle at the base. The it has the anchor with the "US" lettering above. The guard and pommel cap have always stood apart from the normal Civil War officer's sword. It has the bold "USN" in the basket of the guard and the quillion is made like a serpent's head. At the very top of the pommel cap it has the droop wing style naval eagle. If you notice that all of the brass parts have a beautiful untouched patina. This one has a superb amount of the original sharkskin grip present on the handle with a pleasing look all over. It also has the original double twist wire intact on the handle as well. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is made brass and sharkskin. The sharkskin is still solid with a few wear lines. The mounts are the correct naval style with the twisted rope designs leading to the rings. What makes this one extra special is the inscription on the top mount of the sword. It has the jeweler quality inscription of "Denny Hayes" over the "USN". The folks at the FOLD3 research website had some information on him. He is listed as a "Mate" on June 7th 1864. He was promoted to Acting Ensign on November 18th 1864 and was honorably discharged on October 21st 1865. It deserves more research but we will leave that for you. The drag is present and it has the sea serpent design as well. This is an attractive looking original Civil War naval officer's sword and scabbard with a fine identification.
