War of 1812 Era British Marines Coat Button by Nutting & Company

This is a very cool 23mm coat button from the British Royal Marines. This British Marines Coat Button is a nice excavated button with a missing iron shank. This style of button is known as the Pre-1802/1803 British Marine button depending on where you look. In 1802/1803 the British Marine pattern changed to the "Royal Marine" pattern with a wreath at the bottom. This style of button with the backmark appears to have been used by the British Navy on up through the War of 1812 in Canada. On the reverse, it has the backmark that reads "I NUTTING & SON / KING ST. COVENT GARDEN" in a raised mark. It has the anchor in the center with the rope coming off of the end. It also has a rope like design around the border with the anchor on the plain field. This is a great looking early button.
