GAR" Painted Civil War Soldier's Canteen With Spout Intact
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an fine original Civil War soldier's canteen. This is the classic smooth side pattern that was carried by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. This is the pattern with the pewter spout at the top. Inside the spout it has a very cool hand carved wooden stopper with a wonderful look. It has all three original loops straps present around the sides of the canteen. What makes this one extra special is that the body of the canteen was painted long ago for display in the soldier's home or his veteran's hall. They painted the image of the "GAR" design in gold paint after fainting the whole canteen black. This is for the Grand Army of the Republic, which was a veteran's organization for Union soldiers. The paint has a cool looking ancient color like it has been in the soldier's attic for 100 years. This is a solid original Civil War painted veteran's canteen that displays well.
