Here is a piece that you seldom see offered these days. This is the original rifle bayonet that was designed to go on the end of the pattern 1858 Enfield naval rifle. They are officially known as the Enfield style pattern 1859 Cutlass bayonet. They were designed for the end of the gun to be used as a bayonet but are also fully functional as a naval Cutlass. It measures 32-1/2 inches in overall size. The blade is full-length at 27 inches and as you can see the blade has a very pleasing dark gray color all over. At the base of the blade it has the maker's mark still partially visible. Even though these Enfield Cutlass bayonets were English almost the entire production of them utilized blades that were made in Solingen, Germany. The handguard of the piece is made of iron and has a very cool look. The handles on these pieces were formed using pressed leather and this still has both of the pieces. The original retaining spring button is present on the handle but the spring is frozen in place. What makes this one extra special are the engraved digits on the side of the grip. If you notice there is a hand engraved "160". This is one of just thirty to forty known cutlass bayonets from the 1,000 supplied along with the same number of rifles by a British arms merchant under contract with CS Navy Commander James D. Bulloch, chief of overseas navy procurement, on or about Aug. 6, 1861.Bulloch later confirmed that these weapons, along with 1,000 rounds of ammunition each, reached Confederate Savannah aboard the blockade runner "Fingal" on Nov. 14, 1861. The English Connection notes that observed numbers range from 103 to 999, confirming the documented limited delivery. Seven hundred British naval rifles had previously been acquired by CS Ordnance from Sinclair, Hamilton & Co., but those guns had been fitted with conventional sword bayonets. These hand engraved numbers would've matched the 2 band Enfield military rifle. The guns were hand fitted to the bayonets. These numbers are purely Confederate and represents one of the 1st shipments of arms to reach the Confederacy from England. This is a very pure and untouched Confederate edged weapon for your collection.
