Original Civil War Robinson Contract Made U.S. Knapsack from 1864

This is a piece that is becoming tough to come across anymore. It is the authentic original of the Civil War soldier's tarred canvas knapsack. This style was heavily used by the soldiers from the North during the Civil War. This one is better than most of them that you encounter. It still retains the straps coming off of the back and it has the brass and iron buckles and hooks intact as well. On one of the straps you can still read a very small portion of the maker's name of "E. ROBINSON" who had contracts for the ' U.S. Government for both knapsacks and is the same man that had the military rifle contract. The strap also has the inspector stamping of Valentine. The other strap has the contract date of "AUG 2 1864". It is tough to find one of these that has clear markings but this one is very nice. According to the maker book he had government contracts in 1864 for 250,000 knapsacks. The canvas has an attractive appearance and has been stuffed on the inside to enhance the overall look. It has some wear and flaking to the finish on the leather and canvas as you can see but it still displays well. There are few spots that have been reinforced for preservation. It has a name and regiment stenciled on the outer flap but in my opinion, these markings were added more recently. This is a fine display piece for your relic room that costs less than what a cartridge box costs these days.
