Scarce J.T. Smith & Company of New York Made Civil War Pistol Cartridge Box
Click on an image to enlarge
This is the first cartridge box made by this maker that I have ever been able to offer. This is a nice and complete original leather cartridge box for a Civil War pistol. This one has both of the original leather belt loops intact on the back as well as the closure tab and brass finial. On the center of the inside body of the box it has the "J.T. SMITH & CO. NEW YORK MAKERS" stamp. The maker book states that he was making accoutrements for the Government as early as June of 1861 but nothing is listed after 1862. This would explain why so few of their products are encountered these days. They were used and thrown away. The leather is nice and pliable with a great look. This is the box that would look correct with a 44 caliber or 36 caliber pistol. It measures about 6-3/8ths inches by 4-1/2 inches in size. This cartridge box will look correct when displayed beside of any of the major Civil War era revolvers like Colt, Remington or Starr. Nice piece to display with your revolver.
