HAND CARVED CASE! Civil War Era Hard Rubber Medical Syringe
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an interesting piece of original Civil War era medical history. This is an original hard rubber Civil War era doctors syringe. This is similar to the ones that are described and illustrated on page 222 and 225 of Mike Woshner's book entitled India Rubber and Gutta-Percha in the Civil War Era. This one is 1 inch wide and overall length of 5 inches when extended and when the plunger is down it measures 3-5/8th inches. It is the missing the tip off of the bottom and you can tell it was this way when they used it. What is so cool about his one is that it comes inside the custom hand carved wooden carrying case that they used when it was still in service. Because these are so fragile, they used the wooden case to protect it. The piece is in very nice overall condition and still displays quite well.
