Scarce Goodyear Hard Rubber Civil War Naval Soap Dish "Don't Give Up The Ship"
Click on an image to enlarge

Here is a wonderful Civil War navy item! It is an original Civil War gutta purcha hard rubber soap dish. These were quite popular among the well-to-do sailors of the day. The top of the box is the tougher to find style that has not only the "USN" letters with the anchor design but also has the famous wording "DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP". This is in the center of the lid with the rays emanating from the middle. It is missing the original brass ring present on the side of the dish. When you open the lid it has the original mirror in the top. The mirror has gotten hazy over the years from being used. Around the edge of the mirror it would have had the wording "MANUFACTURED BY THE NOVELTY RUBBER CO. NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY UNDER GOODYEAR'S PATENT MAY 6, 1851." and 2/3rds of the marking is still present. The piece is in very nice shape overall with some wear from being used. It has aged to a beautiful brownish color as you can see. This is a wonderful Civil War hard rubber naval soap dish.
