Beautifully Painted "King Philip" Image Civil War Snare Drum by White Brothers of Boston
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very cool display piece for the price. This is an original Civil War snare drum. This is a maple wood body drum that stands 12-3/4ths inches tall and is 17 inches across the top. The body of the drum is in beautiful untouched condition. What makes it really stand out is that one side has the circle of brass tacks and inside those tack it has a wonderful hand painted image. It has the standing image of the famous Native American, King Philip. King Philip's War (1675-1678) was a devastating conflict between English colonists and a coalition of Native American tribes led by Metacomet, also known as King Philip, the Wampanoag sachem. Caused by increasing English encroachment on Native lands and a series of escalating conflicts, the war was the bloodiest per capita in American history. It resulted in the English becoming the dominant power in New England, with the widespread death, enslavement, and displacement of many Native American peoples. Because King Philip fought so bravely he became a martyr for fighting against oppression and he was still remembered by some Southerners fighting the Union oppression. The drum still retains the original wooden bands at the top and bottom. A previous owner added modern white tops to simulate drum heads and he used soft modern ropes to be sure that it didn't damage the wood. Before he made the drum covers, he took a picture of the label on the inside of the wooden body. The paper label proudly states "Made by White Brothers 86 Tremont Street Boston." Records show that White Brothers was located at 86 Tremont Street from 1853 until 1863, so we know this drum isn't post-Civil War in manufacture. It is a great display piece that I wish could tell us its history.
