Horstmann of New York Marked Civil War Foot Officer's Sword in Scabbard
Click on an image to enlarge

Here is a beautiful sword! It is a non-regulation Civil War foot officer's sword in the original scabbard. At the base of the full length 29-3/4th inch blade it has the mark from the famous firm of Horstmann Bros. & Co. of New York. They were one of the premier military outfitters of the 1800's because they sold quality goods such as this beauty. The blade is beautifully etched with a fine amount of the original finish. The etching has the patriotic themes as well as lots of floral and geometric patterns. The hand guard is brass style as is the pommel cap at the top of the sword. This is the version that has the single branch. It has a medium tone all over the brass. The guard has the double branches made of brass. This is a slight variation on the swords pictured on pages 416 to 418 of the Army Sword Book by John Thillmann. He mentions how that since they left the "US" off of the blade it would have been easier to sell these to a Southern state prior to the war. On the handle of the sword it has the original sharkskin grip intact. The double brass twisted wire wrapping is in excellent condition as you can see. The sword is accompanied by the original brass and leather scabbard. The scabbard has the rings, mounts, throat and drag still nicely intact with a very pleasing look all over. This is a very fine looking Civil War officer's sword and scabbard by Horstmann.
