25th Maine Identified Civil War Canteen With Original Cover, Sling & Stopper
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great original Civil War soldier's canteen. This is a smooth side pattern of 1858. This is the canteen that was often used by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. This one has the original pewter spout intact at the top of the canteen. Inside the spout it has the original cork and metal stopper with the chain intact as well. On the sides of the canteen it has the three original strap loops intact. This one is in fine shape and has the original cover still intact with a nice used but not abused look. The canteen still has the original shoulder strap present. What makes this one special is the stamping that is on the side of the body cover. It is stenciled by the owner. It has "C.W.H." and Co. D" and along the bottom it has the "25 ME REG.". It is also carved "Harding" on the side of the pewter spout. I had a time waster order this canteen and sent it back because they letters weren't clear enough. As you can see in all 21 pictures, they are faded but legible and there is no doubt of what they are. The records show that Charles W. Harding was a private in the 25th Maine Infantry. The paperwork that accompanied the sword says that he enlisted on September 10th 1862 and served with the 25th Maine Infantry until July 10th of 1863. They spent their service guard and building up the fortifications around Washington, D.C. A printout of his service as well as that of the 25th Maine will accompany the canteen. This will be a fine piece to add to your soldier's personal items collection.
