This is a nice looking original Civil War cartridge box for the cavalry carbine. The leather is still nice and pliable with a fine well worn look. The outer flap has the closure tab nicely restored. The finial is present as are both of the original roller buckles. When you raise the outer flap, you are greeted by the inner flap with the ears still on the sides. The inner flap has the desirable maker marking of the Chicopee, Massachusetts firm of Emerson Gaylord. Gaylord made many high quality accoutrements for the Union army. The implement pouch is still present as well on the inside. On the innermost compartment the wooden block still present. It fits the .50 Caliber carbine cartridges. This could have been used with several different carbines including the Maynard or Gallagher carbine. The last couple of images shows how a Maynard looks inside the block. It has had both of the loops on the back of the box. This is a nice looking Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box that displays well from all angles.
