This is a great little button! It is the 17mm button for the 83rd Infantry regiment. This is the style that is has the large number "83" in the center of the button. They also have the distinctive French style "turret" shank. This one has the original shank intact on the reverse. In Don Troiani's book on Revolutionary War button this is a variant pattern listed as F83d. This stands for the Angoumois
Regiment. They were a small detachment serving as Marines at sieges of Pensacola,
Fl., and Yorktown, Va., in 1781.In 1783, two deserters from this unit were
described in The Pennsylvania Packet or Gen-ral Advertiser newspaper as
wearing, "...a white coat turned up with green, and yellow buttons". It will enhance any Revolutionary War artifact collection.
