Silvered! Civil War South Carolina State Seal With W.H. Smith Backmark
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a gorgeous looking excavated state seal uniform coat button for the state of South Carolina. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." What is wonderful about this button is that it is one of the rare ones that are silver plated and this one is exceptionally beautiful. The silver is present in the recesses to make the detail stand out. The original back and shank are present on the reverse. It has the maker's mark on the back in the depressed channel from the firm of W.H. Smith of New York. This is the button that is listed as figure SC248a18 in Tice's button book and SC13A in Albert's button book. This is a little tougher to find backmark on this pattern of button. This one is in superb excavated shape and will be a fine addition to your collection.
