Tough to Find 1st Model S&K Marked Civil War Artillery Saber
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a sword that you don't see offered very often. This is the 1st contract of artillery saber made by the firm of Schnitzler & Kirschbaum. They are simply marked "S&K" on the top of the spine of the blade with the crown and the letter "D". The blade is full-length with the light gray tone patina to the ancient plating. The bras hand guard and pommel cap have a very pleasing copper tone to the brass. The bow of the handguard has the stamping "D" with the crown stamp. The handle of the sword is present with the tarred canvas covering with the double twist copper wire. The sword is accompanied be the original metal scabbard. This is the correct early style pattern scabbard that goes into the recesses area in the brass handguard. The scabbard has both of the mounts and rings and the original drag. It is the correct style for the sword that is crafted without a throat at the top. It had an internal spring to hold the sword in place. The base of the spring is present with the spring itself lost to the ages. The scabbard was plated and still retains the majority of the plating. This is a rare sword, it is only the third one of them I have been able to offer in 35+ years.
