This is a fine piece of history from a Civil War veteran. It is an original reunion medal of a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. This was the veteran's organization of the Union veterans of the Civil War. In order to become a member of the organization you had to prove that you served honorably for the United States during the war. This is the medal that the veteran would have gotten for attending the 1916 reunion that was held at Kansas City, Missouri and is so marked on the medallions. It has a fine original golden ribbon intact on the back with the original attachment pin remaining. This one celebrated the GAR Golden Jubilee 50th National Encampment Badge – 1916 Kansas City. Top pin has spread wing eagle over cannons and artillery shells. The first drop has an enamel GAR on top o crossed flags with representative. The second drop has Kansas City The Heart of America 1866-1916 with image of Train. The last drop has Elias R Monfort Commander in Chief GAR. It has the clear "REPRESENTATIVE" marking. This lets us know it was actually worn by a veteran not just a spectator. The next medallion shows the rowing ship scene. The lowest medallion has the image of the soldier in the center. The back of the lower medallion has the Bastian Brothers maker mark from Rochester, New York. It is in excellent displaying shape all the way around. This one is very nice and will enhance any collection.
