This is one of the coolest designed swords of the American Revolutionary War timeframe. This is the very distinctive sword known to collectors as a "Monkey Pommel" officer's sword. My good friend from Antiques Roadshow, the late William Guthman wrote an article for "Man At Arms" magazine (September-October 1982) noting that three swords of this form were found in an attic in Maine. Guthman said that they were made in Eliot, just across the river from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Bill and many others have referred to this type as a monkey hilt, although it is more likely that these are lion head pommels that look more like a monkey. The sword has a slightly curved, single edged, blade with the three fullers on the top of each side of the blade. The sword blade measures 32-7/8ths inches with the overall length of 38-3/4th inches. The blades of these swords show up in a few variation because it appears that the assembled used whatever blades he could get his hands on. This one is a very well made blade as you can see. The sword has a brass classic four slot guard and a simplified lion's head pommel with some engraved details and an integral ball shaped capstan. The cherry grip has a brass ferrule at both ends. For an example of another nearly identical hilt see plate plate 336.S on page 173 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This is a very desirable form of an colonial American short saber and this one is gorgeous. Morphy Auctions sold a similar sword in 2021 for $6600 and this one is in better condition.
