Scarce Revolutionary War French 8th Infantry Button From Yorktown
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a great little button! It is the 18mm button for the 8th Infantry regiment. This is the style that is listed in Albert's book as being for the Continental army but they are actually French. It has the large number "8" in the center of the button. The 8th Regiment also known as the Bearn Regiment, volley, Was in Haiti in 1775-1776, assumed number 13 in 1776. The regiment was re-named the Agenois (14th Regiment) o 1775. Haiti, 1 Bn., 1776-July 1783. The number 8 was assigned to the Bourbonnais regiment (yellow) between 1762 and 1767. It is likely that the buttons found from the 8th Regiment at Yorktown are older buttons still in use by the Bourbonnais or Agenois Regiment (see 13th Regiment). This one has the original "Turret" style shank intact on the reverse. According to the verbal history that accompanied this piece it was recovered in the area of the Yorktown Battlefield. It will enhance any Civil War artifact collection.
