Here is a cool original 17mm Revolutionary War button from the state of Massachusetts. This information comes direct from Don Troiani's book on Revolvutionary War military buttons. In
May 1778, the State of Massachusetts received over 2600 gross of what were
termed "Ordnance
buttons" in large and small sizes. These had arrived on the Brig Nantes,
and another ship laden with war supplies. The manifest indicates that these
buttons were numbered one through ten. These are the buttons found in the campsites of New England troops occupied
during the period of 1779-1783. Several have been recovered at the New
Boston campsite alone. Originally attributed to the Connecticut Line in the
classic work, History Written with Pick And Shovel, (a compilation of New York
Historical Society field reports), by Reginald Pelham Bolton and William Louis
Calver, it is now known that these buttons were actually bought by the state of
Massachusetts." The large number of specimens recovered at the sites of
Connecticut Village and New Hampshire Village clearly indicates very widespread
use by soldiers of essentially all the New England lines. Of high quality and
refined design, these are typical of white metal French army buttons of the
period. The numbers on the small sizes which have been recovered are 1, 2, 5,
7, and 9. This one has the original "Turret" style shank intact on the reverse. The verbal history that accompanied the button is that it was recovered years ago in the New Boston area. A very cool original Revolutionary War button!
