Fine Original Civil War Extracting Worm For .58 Caliber Springfield Military Rifles
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a superb original gun worm for the Civil War .58 caliber rifle or musket. This is the pattern that goes with the larger bore military rifles but is made like the model 1855 pattern Springfield and would be correct for the 1861 or 1863 models as well. These were used for the cleaning out of the musket bore. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. It is like the one illustrated on page 105 of the gun tool book. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition.
