Rare Gutta Purcha Civil War Powder Flask by Frary
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the toughest to find of all Civil War powder flasks. This is the one that is constructed out of the hard rubber material that is referred to by collectors as gutta-percha. They didn't make many of these out of this material and very few of them have survived. Most of them were broken, because they are fragile. This one is in fine condition. It even has the four original strap loops intact on the sides. At the top of the flask it has the original top but the spout itself looks like it is a replacement from another flask. The spring is intact and is still functional. Along the top, it has the Frary, Benham & Co. maker marking and "IMPROVED PATENT". This firm was purchased by the American Flask & Cap Co. in 1857. It measures 8 inches in height and is 3-1/2 inches across in overall size. This is a very rare original Civil War era flask in very nice condition.
