This is a wonderful grouping I just picked up from a friend up North. It is an an authentic Civil War .36 caliber revolver from the famous Whitney Company and this one has a very cool story with it. This is the style referred to by collectors as the Whitney Navy revolver. It is called that because of the .36 caliber bore size of the barrel, not particularly because they were used by the navy. These were a favorite of the cavalrymen when they could get one. This gun displays beautifully. The metal parts all have a fine looking attic patina. On the back of the full-length 7-3/4ths inch barrel it has the Whitney maker's mark along with the New Haven, Connecticut production location. Yes this is the same Whitney Company that was founded by Eli Whitney, who is credited with inventing the cotton gin. The action on the gun works well on all positions. It has matching serial numbers of 2,029. According to Flayderman's Guide they made about 33,000 of these revolvers. On the handle it has the original 2-piece walnut grips intact with a beautiful look to the dark wood. This gun came from the estate of James G. Theaker who served with the 50th Ohio Infantry. Theaker enlisted at the age of 32 as a 1st Lieutenant int he 50th Ohio Infantry on August 18th 1862. He served with the 50th until he mustered out on June 26th 1865 and was promoted to the rank of Captain on April 15th 1864. What is special about this gun is one of the letters that accompanied it. One of the four letters was written was written by Theaker from January 4th 1863. He is writing home to his brother. On the second page, he states "I will also send by him my revolver that I captured from the Rebel Bushwhacker, Capt. Skillman." The records show that William H. Skillman served with the 9th Tennessee Cavalry and at that time, they were serving under the famous Confederate, John Hunt Morgan. The gun still has the original leather holster and you can tell by the wear that it has always been in there. Also accompanying the Confederate captured revolver are several pieces that would have been worn by Theaker. It has his eagle sword belt buckle with the original brass keeper and a portion of the leather belt. It has his percussion cap box and his E. Gaylord marked pistol cartridge box. It also has the two pairs of shoulder rank insignia. They are his infantry shoulder straps, one for the 1st Lieutenant and the other is for the Captain's rank. There is also a G.A.R. veteran's uniform button and an Ohio buckeye. You get the pistol and holster, the four letters, the percussion cap box, the cartridge box, the buckle with partial belt, the rank insignia, the veteran button and the buckle for the one price. This is a great displaying gun from the famous Whitney Company with a wonderful history!
