This is the first one of these I have encountered and when I researched it, dealer Dave Taylor from Ohio had one and he described it well so I took his description. Thanks Dave! He wrote: Navy? Previous owner (a Civil War navy collector for 45 years) related that it is a Navy cartridge box for a single shot 1842 pistol. I initially thought it may perhaps be for a Navy box-lock pistol???, or perhaps a revolver based on the size. But the previous owner knows his navy stuff, so he is probably correct in his attribution. It is virtually identical to a USN fuse/friction primer pouch except that it has a flapped implement pouch inside. I’ve never owned another of these, and hence, consider this to be quite scarce. Definitely Civil War or earlier. Definitely scarce. ;I will let you research which gun it was issued with. It is absolutely one darn rare piece of Civil War leather. Thank you Dave. As for the box itself, the black leather has aged to a pretty brown tone. It measures 4-3/4th inches across the flap and the other box dimensions are 3 inches by 2 inches. It is made with no inner flap but has the small implement compartment and this one is intact. The innermost section has the original tin intact and it is made without dividers. On the bottom of the box, it has the original well made brass finial and the base of the closure tab is present. On the back of the box, it has the slender single belt loop intact that is held in place by two brass rivets. This is a rare one and one your friends probably won't have.
