Here is an original Civil War officer sword and we know who carried it. This is a style that is very often referred to as a "foot" officer's sword. The version worn by soldiers with the rank of lieutenant or Capt. they are distinctive because of the floral pattern in the cast brass hand guard. All of the brass parts of the sword have a nice golden patina like it spent a century in the veterans attic. On the handle of the sword it has the original wooden core intact with the sharkskin over the top. The thick single strand brass wire on the grip is in beautiful condition. The blade is full-length at 31 inches. As you can see the blade has a beautiful steel gray tone all over. You can see a good bit of the original etching on both sides of the blade here and there. At the base of the blade, you can clearly see the desirable maker Mark of the Collins Company of Hartford, Connecticut. You can also see the "1862" production date stamp. The front of the sword has the spread wing eagle. On the back of the blade it has the large letter "US" in the middle of the blade. At the base of the blade it has the etching of the owner of the sword. In a banner, it has the name "JUSTIN P. KELLOGG". Our friends at CivilWarData.com had Kellogg's records as well as an image of him. Justin Perkins Kellogg was from Amherst, MA and was a 24-year-old Lawyer. He Enlisted on 9/12/1862 as a 2nd Lieut. On 10/11/1862, he was commissioned into "G" Co. Massachusetts e52nd Infantry. Kellogg was Mustered Out on 8/14/1863 at Camp Miller, Greenfield, MA. On 7/22/1864, he was commissioned into "B" Co. Massachusetts 42nd Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 11/11/1864. Kellogg rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant 10/28/1862 and was a Corporal on 7/22/1864 (As of Co. B 42nd MA Inf). After the war, he lived in Geneva, Switzerland. A printout of his service will accompany the sword. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard retains both of the mounts and rings as well as the original drag. This is a nice looking original Civil War officers sword and scabbard and we know who carried it.
