This is an original Civil War
soldier’s letter. This letter is written by Jonathan Beaty (Beatty in the
records) who served with the 13th Ohio Infantry. It was written from
the General Field Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 27th
1864. The records show that Beaty enlisted as a 35-year-old private in the 13th
Ohio Infantry on August 18th 1862. He served with the 13th
until he was discharged for disability on May 20th 1865. He was
wounded during the fierce battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20th
1863. The paper measures 8 inches by 10 inches in overall size when it is
opened up and has the Christian Commission embossing. The letter is handwritten
on fine quality paper in ancient pencil. He is writing home to his wife and
child. Beaty tells his wife that he is writing on Easter Sunday. He says he
sent money home via Adams Express but doesn’t know if it has made it yet. He is
recovering from his wounds and says how he still can’t eat correctly and is "… still
nursen…”. He wants to come home or rejoin the regiment but doesn’t think he can
do either. It comes with a type-written translation of the contents. A brief
printout of the soldier’s service.
