Green Overprint! "South Striking Down Union" Confederate $2 Note From 1862
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an attractive original 1862 issue of the $2.00 bill from the Confederate States of America. In the center of the note it has the image of the personification of the South striking down the Union. On the left hand side it has Judah P. Benjamin from the Confederate Cabinet. Benjamin was from Louisiana and held many important positions in the Confederate Government. At different times he served as attorney general, secretary of war and secretary of state. At the end of the Civil War he fled to England and practiced law. This is the pattern of Confederate note that is listed as T-43 in Criswell's book. Nicely hand signed and numbers. If you notice the note has the green ink "2 TWO" over print that was added to help prevent counterfeiting. The T43, printed by Blanton Duncan, had a green underprint applied to it which was not authorized by the Confederate government. When the Confederacy would not pay for the added feature, it was dropped, though 194,900 notes of the type had already been printed. It was professionally graded by the PMG Company and they rated it as "Very Fine" condition. It comes in their acid free holder for display preservation. PMG mentions a small hole and evidence of a previous mounting. This is a very attractive note!
