5 by 7 Inch Engraving Image of Union General George Armstrong Custer in Uniform
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a clear engraving style image of George Armstrong Custer. The paper card measures 5-1/4th inches by 7-1/4th inches in overall size. It is a image that shows Custer in his fine Indian War era uniform. In April of 1865 he was promoted to the rank of Major General. After the Civil War the need for command officers was no longer there and many, to stay in service, accepted demotions to a lower rank and paid the wages of rank now held, but was always given the respect and the title of the higher rank previously held. After the War, Custer was required to revert to his previous permanent rank of Captain. He then entered the painstakingly slow promotion process that was customary in the small regular army. That's why Custer was always referred to as "General Custer". This statement came from a great web-site on Custer at www.garryowen.com. This is a wonderful classic pose of one of the most famous personalities of the Civil War and is likely one of the ones printed to mourn the General after he was killed at the Little Bighorn.
