Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an original Civil War era medical item. This is an original surgeon's scalpel that measures 7-1/4th inches in overall length with the blade itself making up 3 of those inches. It has the curved blade that is known as a "Bistoury" scalpel. This is the multipiece construction used during the Civil War era they later realized that this multipiece construction would allow bacteria to grow more easily than the single piece construction used in later years. The handle is made of a nice piece of dark wood that displays quite well. On the left-hand side of the blade itself you can see the stamped maker's mark. It has the maker Mark of the Cincinnati, Ohio firm of Max Wocher. The records show that he was in business using this marking from 1840 until 1870.This is a nice and still affordable piece of Civil War era medical history.
