Here is a very fine original authentic signature of Civil War Confederate General Francis M. Cockrell. Cockrell was born in Johnson County, Missouri and was named after the famous Revolutionary War here, Francis Marion. He enlisted as a private and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. HE WAS WOUNDED A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES! Cockrell was from the state of Missouri and during the Civil War he fought at the battles of Iuka, Corinth, Grand Gulf, , Champion's Hill, Wilson's Creek, Elkhorn & Carthage all the way through Vicksburg and Atlanta. Cockrell was in charge of Fort Hill in Vicksburg during the valiant defense of the city during the siege by U.S. Grant. On November 30th 1864 he entered the fierce fighting at Franklin, Tennessee where he was severely wounded three times. He survived the Civil War and was elected to the Senate from Missouri in 1874 and served the state for 30 years. Cockrell dies in Washington on December 13th 1915. The autograph is on the back of a printed circular for the Official Congressional Directory. He replies to the printer of the piece Benjamin Perley Poore stating that no changes need to be made except that his family has went home and he is alone. Benjamin Perley Poore (November 2, 1820 – May 30, 1887) was a prominent American newspaper correspondent, editor, and author in the mid-19th century. One of the most popular and prolific journalists of his era, he was an active partisan for the Whig and Republican parties. It is accompanied by a modern Xerox image of the General. autograph is on measures 5 inches by 8 inches in overall size and is dated June 26th 1884. It is a fine piece of
