Attractive U.S. Model 1839 Military Pistol Cartridge Box With US Plate
Click on an image to enlarge
When was the last time you had a chance to own a cartridge box of this pattern? This is the US model 1839 military pistol cartridge box. This is the style that the US government used from the 1839 timeframe up until the Civil War. It would be correct for display with your US of the model 1836 or 1842 single shot military pistol. The outer flap of the box itself measures 7 inches by 5-1/4th inches in overall size. This one has the original US model 1839 cartridge box plate affixed in the center of the outer flap. They usually have the smaller size boxplate but this one has the large size plate. When you look at the inside of the flap, you can tell that this one has been on there forever. The closure tab is loose but still present on the bottom the cartridge box. When you open up the outer flap you are greeted by the complete inner flap with both "ears" tabs on the ends being gone for eons. On the innermost compartment it still retains the original tin that would have held the cartridges at one time. On the back of the cartridge box it has both of the original leather loops for attachment on the soldiers belt but one is separated at the bottom. The stitching on the side of the box shrank and separated over the years. As you can see in the images this is a nice solid box that you can tell was used by the soldier but never abused. It will make a fine addition to your single shot military pistol.
