This is a nice looking pair of original CDV image of a Civil War Union soldier. The soldiers and sailors would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp or they made it into town. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. These two images came from the museum collection of Don Limpert (1927-2022). Don Limpert was a long-time collector of memorabilia from the veterans of the Civil War with an emphasis on the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans of the Civil War organization. He saw the possibilities of combining his vast collection of GAR memorabilia with an original Grand Army of the Republic post building that was available to purchase in downtown Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He purchased the building in 2012, and the building became the Michigan Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Museum. After his passing in 2022, his collection was sold and now is your chance to own a piece of that astounding collection. He had these images attributed to Thomas P. Bishop. they are two different views of Bishop in his civilian clothes. The records show that Bishop served as commissary sergeant for Co. F, 3rd Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted at the age of 27 as a private on Sept. 7, 1861 and mustered out on Oct. 12, 1861. Bishop re-enlisted and promoted to Corporal on Jan. 19, 1864. He was then appointed Commissary Sgt on Apr. 14, 1865; and mustered out as a veteran on Feb. 12, 1866. A printout of his service will accompany the images.
