Original 1863 Dated Confederate Fayetteville North Carolina Made Rifle
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original Confederate military rifle from the Civil War. This is the pattern that was made at Fayetteville, North Carolina. They were made in .58 caliber bore size and are designed like the US Model 1855 2-band rifle. This one has the full-length 33 inch barrel. Inside the barrel, it has the rifling remaining but is pitted. At the breech of the barrel it has the original rear leaf sight. On the breech of the barrel you can still clearly see the eagle and "VP" marks where it was approved for military service. The lockplate of the gun is marked with the 1863 production date as well as the "FAYETTEVILLE" production location. Just in front of the hammer, it has the upturned wing Eagle with the "C.S.A." lettering below. This marking has always been coveted by Confederate collectors. The mechanics of the lock still catches on both of the positions. This gun has the correct and distinctive "S" shaped Fayetteville hammer. The stock has a pleasing, ancient look to the walnut wood. The stock of the gun has a beautiful appearance with the wear you expect to see in a gun that saw service for the South. On the flat of the stock, opposite of the lockplate, you can see the outline of what would have been the "PB" cartouche where it was approved by the inspector Philip Burkart. There is also a set of "A.H." initials. It has the full-length ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel that appears to be original. The buttplate of the gun is the correct Confederate Fayetteville production. They are easily distinguished because of the bold "CSA" lettering on the top of the brass of the buttplate. Both of the sling swivel are still present. This gun displays beautifully and has a classic Rebel look!
