GOERGIA! Peach Tree State Pattern Confederate Made "Gladiator" Style Short Artillery Sword

What a cool Confederate sword! This is the classic pattern of Confederate short artillery sword. These were patterned after the gladiator style sword. Since the 1830's the U.S. Government had made a sword of this pattern that was officially known as the model 1832 U.S. artillery short sword. When the Civil War broke out many of the Southern arsenals produced their versions of that sword. This is one of those Confederate manufactured swords. There are a few obvious differences between these Confederate swords and the Union made swords. The blade on the Confederate sword has no fuller grooves on each side and the Union sword will have three on each side. You can see that this one was used and you just wonder what it saw! The handle on the Union made sword will have rivets holding the blade in place and the Confederate made sword will only be peened at the top of the pommel. This made the manufacture of the piece quicker, easier and less expensive. This one is a beautiful and classic example of the Confederate workmanship. The sword measures 24 inches overall with 18-1/2 of those inches being the blade. The brass that composes the handle has dark attic tone color to the metal. The handle on this one lets us know where it was made. If you notice the small handle has tightly spaced grip ridges in the brass. This is a trait of being manufactured at the famous Macon, Georgia firm of E. J. Johnston. There is a similar one that has their maker mark stamped into the handle that lets us know who produced this pattern. This one is completely unmarked but is a Johnston product and is 100% Confederate in manufacture. Since these handles were made without the rivets to keep them from getting loose, they often wobble. You can see that eon's ago the soldier brazed around the blade to keep it firm int he grip. It is a cool an necessary field fix. The scabbard on these swords were most often constructed of wood and metal and break quite easily. That is why most of the, including this one, is without a scabbard. Recently, this sword came out of an old house in North Carolina according to verbal history. This is a nice looking Confederate gladiator style artillery short sword from Johnston.
